More than 40 animals, including 39 dogs, three children, and two women, were found living in an unsanitary home in Ansonia on Thursday, police said.
Officers received a complaint of possible animal cruelty about the home on Schumacher Drive and obtained a search warrant. When they arrived, they found garbage, animal feces, and urine throughout the house, according to police.
Living in the house were 39 dogs, two ferrets, two adult women, and three children aged 5, 2, and 15, police said.
Initial examination showed that all of the dogs were healthy, and a veterinarian will check to make sure they hadn’t been neglected, according to police.
The Department of Children and Families assisted and brought the children to a local hospital for evaluation after officers observed the condition of the home.
The home was deemed unsafe to live in and condemned by the Ansonia building inspector.
The investigation into the home is ongoing, police said.
