A Bristol man is facing charges after police said he attacked another man with a box cutter in Bracket Park. According to officials, the incident happened because the man intervened in an effort to stop an assault on a woman.
Police were called to the park around 5:45 p.m. Tuesday on the report of a fight with one person possibly armed with a knife.
When officers got to the scene, they found two men physically fighting and managed to separate them. According to officials, 62-year-old Joseph Cupe had been assaulting a woman in the park when another man intervened to stop it and try to help the woman.
Officials said that Cupe became “agitated” and reportedly attacked the other man using a box cutter to slash him across the chest. The man was taken to the hospital for treatment of his injuries, which are believed to be non-life-threatening.
Cupe was taken into custody without incident and was charged with first-degree assault, second-degree breach of peace, first-degree reckless endangerment and was held on a $100,000 bond.
The woman involved left the area before police arrived, according to officials, and has not been identified at this time. Police are asking for assistance in identifying her to ensure her safety and aid the ongoing investigation.
Anyone with information is asked to contact Officer Duncan of the Bristol Police Department at 860-584-3011.
