Danbury man killed after being struck by a car in Waterbury
A 43-year-old man is dead after being hit by a car on Thursday night.
Officers responded to the area of S Main Street around 9:45 p.m. for a serious motor vehicle collision involving a pedestrian.
When officers arrived, they found a man lying on the roadway adjacent to an SUV, which was later determined to have struck him, police said.
According to police, the victim sustained severe head trauma and was pronounced dead at the scene.
After further investigation, officers determined that the driver of the SUV, 38-year-old Meralis Rivera-Maldonado, kept driving after striking the pedestrian and collided with two additional unoccupied parked vehicles before coming to a stop, police said.
While interviewing the Rivera-Maldonado, they observed distinct signs that she was intoxicated.
Rivera-Maldonado was taken into custody and charged with manslaughter in the second degree with a motor vehicle, reckless driving, and operating under the influence of alcohol and or drugs.
This is an active investigation and is being handled by the departments Crash Reconstruction Unit.
