A motorcyclist crashed into a state Department of Transportation vehicle after a separate crash prompted a highway closure on Interstate 91 in North Haven on Sunday.
Troopers were investigating a separate serious motorcycle crash on I-91 North near exit 13 around 9 p.m. The highway was closed and traffic was being diverted off of exit 12.
According to police, a 17-year-old from Wallingford driving a motorcycle traveled through the traffic diversion and continued traveling northbound. As the motorcyclist approached the active crash scene, troopers said he hit an unoccupied DOT vehicle while it was parked in the center lane diverting traffic.
After the crash, the motorcyclist became separated from the motorcycle, slid across the pavement and then hit a metal beam guardrail post.
He was transported to Yale New Haven Hospital to be treated for his injuries.
The crash remains under investigation.
