4 people taken to hospital after 5-vehicle crash on I-91 in Windsor: State police
Five cars were involved in a crash on Interstate 91 North in Windsor on Sunday morning after a driver “traveling at a high rate of speed” struck multiple cars, according to Connecticut State Police.
State police said they responded to I-91 near Exit 37 around 6:49 a.m. for the crash.
Four of the five cars were slowing down or stopped as they approached traffic in front of them when the fifth car that was driving in the center lane approached them from behind at a high rate of speed, state police said.
The driver of the fifth car swerved to the right to try to avoid hitting another car. Instead, the car clipped the back of an SUV in the right lane, causing it to lose control and veer into the center lane, where it struck another car, according to state police.
That impact pushed the second car, causing it to veer right into a third car in the right lane. The fifth car then continued north and rear-ended a fourth car before coming to a stop.
Four people were taken to the hospital with possible injuries. One driver was taken to Saint Francis Hospital, while another driver, a passenger, and the driver of the car that police determined caused the crash were taken to Hartford Hospital for evaluation, state police said.
All injuries were minor, according to state police.
The driver of the first car and a 13-year-old passenger, as well as the driver of the fourth car, were not injured.
Four of the five vehicles had to be towed from the scene, according to state police.
State police determined the driver of the fifth car was at fault for the crash and issued the driver a misdemeanor summons, according to a crash report.
