Two people were sent to the hospital on Tuesday night after a fire spread through a Hamden home, firefighters said.
They were transported for smoke inhalation and are both expected to be fully recovered, according to firefighters.
Crews were called to a home on Winnett Street at 9:32 p.m. and arrived at 9:35 p.m. They found heavy fire and smoke on the first and second floors and quickly extinguished what broke out on the first floor, firefighters said.
Firefighters said the house was older and had balloon-frame construction, meaning it lacked fire stops. This allowed the fire to spread quickly through the first floor, onto the second, and into the attic.
One person in the home was alerted by a smoke detector and notified two other family members, so they were all able to safely evacuate, firefighters said.
No firefighters were injured.
The Hamden Fire Department received mutual aid from the Cheshire, New Haven, and North Haven Fire Departments.
The fire marshal said it started in a den on the first floor of the home, but the cause is still under investigation.
