A teenager is charged in connection with a double shooting that happened in February, New Haven police said.
The shooting happened on Feb. 15 around 1 a.m. ShotSpotter notified officers of a shooting in the area of the John S. Martinez School on James Street. When officers arrived at the scene, they found a large group of people dispersing from the area near Mill Street and Chapel Street, according to officials.
Police said that a passerby told them of a fight that happened on Chapel Street and that someone had been shot.
Eventually, officers found two 20-year-old men from New Haven. They had been taken to other areas of the city by a private car, according to officials, and their injuries were considered non-life-threatening.
New Haven detectives developed probable cause to arrest and charge a 16-year-old from the city in connection with the shooting.
The teen was taken into custody on Wednesday and charged with two counts of first-degree assault, carrying a pistol without a permit, unlawful discharge of a firearm, and first-degree reckless endangerment.
New Haven’s Acting Police Chief David Zannelli thanked the community for its assistance in the investigation and said investigators had “a lot of complicating factors for us to work through.”
