Big news! Finding good food in the Adirondacks just got easier thanks to our brand new sister site: ADKbites.com
Though the massive and mountainous upstate New York region is renowned for hiking, fly-fishing, skiing, biking, and boating–and as the home of the “Miracle on Ice” 1980s Olympics–
it’s less well known for its food.
ADKbites will follow CTbites’ lead by focusing on the people, places, and flavors that make the culinary experience within the park unique.
Created by veteran food writer Joanne Smart, ADKbites fills a gap in regional food coverage by helping residents and visitors discover the best restaurants, markets, farms, bakeries, bars, and breweries within, and just beyond, the Blue Line.
“There’s a lot of good food in the Adirondacks,” notes Smart. “It’s just not always easy to find.”
The just-launched website will feature restaurant reviews, food and drink news, destination dining guides, profiles of local artisans, and articles exploring the region’s culinary culture.
Coverage spans the entire six-million-acre park, including Lake George, Lake Placid, Saranac Lake, Old Forge, the Champlain Valley, the High Peaks, and more.
A sample of articles includes a look at the best restaurant to open in Lake Placid in years, a visit to a speakeasy that serves outstanding cocktails and vegetarian fare, and a deli aspiring to be New-York–City-good in a tiny, rural town.
“The restaurants here tend to rely on the local ingredients from the beautiful farms that dot the landscape,” says Smart, “so eating in the Adirondacks really feels of a place.”
While there are only about 130,000 permanent ADK residents, the park, which is larger than Yosemite, the Grand Canyon, and Yellowstone combined, hosts about 12 million visitors annually.
“ADKbites is for people who love good food, whether they live here full-time or just love to visit,” says Smart. “Together we’ll explore the park one bite at a time.”
Smart brings more than two decades of food media experience to the project. She previously served as Senior Editor at Fine Cooking magazine and has co-authored award-winning cookbooks with chefs like Scott Conant of Chopped fame.
Visitors to her site can also sign up for the free ADKbites newsletter featuring recent discoveries, locally-made product recommendations, insider tips, and recipes inspired by the region.
