A major redevelopment project in New Haven is reaching a milestone as a nonprofit prepares to open the doors to a new headquarters and workforce training center, with broader plans that include housing and a grocery store.
ConnCAT is set to hold a grand opening for the new building on Friday, offering the public a first look at the space along Dixwell Avenue.
The facility includes rooms for hands-on career training, such as a space where students can learn medical skills like phlebotomy.
The building also features a digital art lab and performance areas designed to expand learning opportunities.
“We are incredibly excited,” said ConnCAT CEO Erik Clemons.
The nonprofit broke ground on the project at the site of a former strip mall more than a year and a half ago. Leaders say the development is expected to be transformative for both the organization and the surrounding neighborhood.
“It is about workforce development, job training for folks, hopefully, who are from this community and around, the neighboring community. But also this is about bringing service to this community and investment in this community,” Clemons said.
In the culinary classroom, former student Mike Brown said the program helped him start his own business, Uncle Mike’s Food Spot.
“I learned a lot of different things,” Brown said.
Now he sees the possibilities these new spaces open for future classes.
“I wish I had it for like that. It’s going to be great for them,” he said.
Future phases of the development include plans to build affordable housing and a grocery store.
“I think there’s a big need. Some refer to it as a food desert because there’s not a lot of fresh food,” said ConnCAT board member Paul McRaven.
The project, known as FIRST Haven in Dixwell, cost about $65 million, funded through a mix of state and federal money, grants, loans and donations.
The grand opening is scheduled for 4 p.m. on Friday and is open to the public.
