Two Wallingford women are facing animal cruelty charges after police said they left their pets unattended for days without food, water, or proper care, resulting in the death of one cat, police said.
Wallingford Police responded to a complaint of animal cruelty at the women’s South Side Terrace home during the week of June 8.
When they arrived, they found that the 25- and 22-year-old women allegedly had left their home unattended for three days, while three cats remained confined in separate cages and a dog had free access to the home.
The women admitted that the pets had no food, water, or place to relieve themselves. They said the cats were kept in cages because of extreme hoarding conditions in the home, according to police.
When the women returned, one of the cats died, and one of the women put it in a freezer “while making arrangements for its disposal,” police said.
The other cats and the dog were severely matted, malnourished, and dehydrated, police said.
The women were arrested and charged with four counts of cruelty to animals.
They were released on a $15,000 bond and are scheduled to appear in Meriden Superior Court on June 25.
