New Haven city employee misused funds: Officials
A former New Haven city employee reportedly misused city funds, and police are now investigating, officials said.
Mayor Justin Elicker’s office said it was reviewing credit card records, and city staff identified concerns about several purchases made by Latha Swamy, the director of the Food System Policy Division.
According to the mayor’s office, Swamy admitted to making unauthorized personal purchases totaling about $5,000 and to violating city policies when asked to clarify the expenditures.
City officials conducted a hearing last week and decided to end Swamy’s employment, the mayor’s office said. She had worked for the city since September 2018.
The New Haven Police Department has been notified, officials said, and an investigation is underway.
“Once the police department’s investigation is complete, we anticipate having a fuller picture of the unauthorized personal purchases that were made, and the police department will act accordingly based on their findings,” said Elicker’s office.
