Police have prepared two new arrest warrants for the former employee at an Avon daycare accused of sexually assaulting children at the facility.
The warrants for Jan Carlos Berrios-Otero, 29, were filed at Torrington Superior Court and are being reviewed by a judge, according to Lt. John Schmalberger, of the Avon Police Department.
Each warrant charges Berrios-Otero with one count of illegal sexual contact with a minor and fourth-degree sexual assault, he said.
The charges are similar to what Berrios-Otero is already facing.
Police began their initial investigation at the BrightPath Avon Early Learning and Child Care Center after an administrator contacted them at the end of March about an employee possibly having inappropriate contact with a child.
Berrios-Otero was arrested on April 1. He has since been charged in connection with six additional incidents involving five children, according to police.
Bright Path closed the Avon location last week.
“These additional warrants make clear that this investigation is continuing to expand and that more children were allegedly harmed than initially known,” said attorneys Sarah Klein and Eric Schoenberg, who are representing some of the families of the alleged victims. “Each new victim identified represents a profound failure of protection by the adults and institutions entrusted with these children’s safety.”
The attorneys said they believe there could be additional victims who have not come forward yet.
It is not clear when the judge will sign the warrants or when Berrios-Otero will be back in court on the additional charges.
