WNBA, NBA approve sale of Connecticut Sun to new owner
The WNBA and NBA have officially approved the sale and relocation of the Connecticut Sun, the WNBA announced Tuesday.
The team will relocate from the Mohegan Tribe to its new owner, Tilman J. Fertitta, and head to Houston, Texas, for the 2027 season.
During the upcoming season, the Sun will host two regular-season games at PeoplesBank Arena in Hartford and return to Boston for a matchup at TD Garden, while the Mohegan Sun Arena will remain the team’s home for 2026.
This will end a 23-year run by the team in New England after the Mohegan Tribe bought the team and moved them to Uncasville from Orlando in 2003.
Houston was one of the groups that expressed interest in buying the team last year, eventually raising its bid to $250 million — the amount that Cleveland, Detroit, and Philadelphia paid for expansion fees. Now, with the $300 million sale price, that’s the highest a team has been sold for in WNBA history.
The last WNBA team to move cities was the Las Vegas Aces, who relocated from San Antonio in 2017.
