Popular New Haven nightclub announces its shutting down
Rumaj Nightclub on Crown Street in New Haven is closing its doors for good this weekend, the business announced on Instagram last Wednesday.
“After 4 unforgettable years, Rumaj Nightclub will officially be closing our doors on May 17th. ❤️,” the nightclub wrote. “What started as an idea turned into thousands of memories, friendships, late nights, celebrations, and moments we’ll never forget.”
A state hearing is still scheduled for May 21 on whether Rumaj should lose its liquor license, but the nightclub will now close four days prior to that date.
The nightclub did not provide a reason for its closure.
The announcement also comes about two weeks after a 19-year-old man was arrested in connection with an April 19 incident in which police say he intentionally drove a car into a crowd following a fight outside Rumaj.
According to New Haven police, officers initially responded to a fight involving two men outside the nightclub shortly after 1 a.m. About 20 minutes later, they received multiple reports that a vehicle had struck people on College Street near a parking garage.
Police said a video showed the driver, later identified as 19-year-old Brayden Chance, appearing to intentionally drive onto the sidewalk and into a group of people. A 20-year-old woman from Milford was struck and taken to Yale New Haven Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.
Chance later turned himself in and faces multiple charges, including attempted assault and reckless endangerment, police said.
