
A family pet is dead after a Sunday morning house fire according to the Hamden Fire Department.
They say crews responded to a structure fire with heavy smoke conditions and zero visibility.
According to officials, they were able to gain access to the basement with an extinguisher before a second crew arrived on scene to extinguish the remaining fire.
Officials say the fire was contained to the basement but the house had extensive heat and smoke damage.
They say the family pet died from smoke inhalation and the American Red Cross responded to the scene to provided assistance to the rest of the family.
One occupant of the house was transported to a hospital to receive medical attention.
Two dogs and two cats were also rescued from the home and received medical attention police say.
The Cheshire, New Haven and North Haven Fire Departments provided station coverage during the fire.
The Hamden Fire Marshal Office says that the fire started on a flat top grill.
