One family displaced, one cat dead after structure fire in Ledyard

At approximately 12:30 p.m. the Ledyard Fire Company, Gales Ferry Fire Company and Mashantucket Fire Department were dispatched to Thompson Street for a report of a deck fire that was extending to the structure.

Upon arrival, firefighters found heavy smoke conditions showing from the front of the house, with flames showing from the rear going into the first floor and attic space.

All occupants were able to safely evacuate from the home before the crews arrived on scene. One individual was evaluated on scene for possible smoke inhalation.

Firefighters did rescue two cats; however one died due to the injuries from the fire.

The fire was placed under control.

No additional injuries were reported. The American Red Cross is helping to assist the displaced family.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
