A 69-year-old man was stabbed near a busy shopping plaza on Greenwood Avenue in Bethel on Tuesday morning, police said.
Bethel police officers were dispatched to 208 Greenwood Ave. for a report of a stabbing around 9:30 a.m., according to Bethel Police Chief Michael J. Libertini.
When they arrived, they found and administered aid to the man, who had been stabbed at least twice, once in the upper back and once in the wrist, Libertini said.
The man, who was not identified, sustained non-life-threatening injuries and was transported to Danbury Hospital, according to Libertini.
Police said they were told that the suspect was walking across the street near Dolan’s Plaza at 211 Greenwood Ave. with a duffel bag.
An off-duty Stamford police officer was following the suspect, 39-year-old Sean Vota of Northport, New York, and “relaying critical information to our dispatchers and on-scene police officers,” Libertini said.
Responding officers found Vota at Dolan’s Plaza. He was arrested without incident, according to Libertini.
Libertini said there is no threat to the public.
The charges against Vota are pending.
“It should be noted that the Bethel Police are grateful for the quick actions of the witnesses who saw what had occurred and called 911,” Libertini said. “Specifically, an off-duty Stamford Police Officer who followed the suspect while relaying critical information to our dispatchers and on-scene police officers.”
