BrightPath announces closure of Avon daycare location

The BrightPath daycare location in Avon will close by the end of May, according to a spokesperson.

The announcement comes after a former employee was arrested and charged with sexual assault. Jan Carlos Berrios-Otero, 29, was arrested April 1 after an administrator of the BrightPath Avon Early Learning and Child Care Center contacted police and said she believed an incident between Berrios-Otero and a child had occurred inside the center on Simsbury Road.

BrightPath’s parent company is also facing a lawsuit after more families came forward to police following Berrios-Otero’s arrest.

A BrightPath spokesperson put out a statement Wednesday night announcing the closure.

BrightPath has made the difficult decision to close our Avon location over the next month, with our final day being May 22, 2026.

After careful consideration, we have determined that it is in the best interest of our children and families to take this course of action. As we are guided by their well-being, we believe that they deserve an experience without the disruption that BrightPath Avon has faced in recent weeks.

Through this transition period, we will continue to deliver the highest standards of care, in addition to comprehensive support to the families at BrightPath Avon in finding alternative childcare.

We remain fully committed to working with law enforcement and other agencies in their search for the facts regarding this situation at BrightPath Avon. We have begun our own externally-led investigation, and we will commission an independent review of these findings when completed.

In the meantime, we remain committed to protecting the safety of the children in all of our centers and will deliver the highest standards of care as we close our Avon center. We will continue to reinforce expectations with staff across our centers, review how our policies are applied in practice and ensure strong leadership during this period.

This has been heartbreaking time for our entire community, and we remain dedicated to providing support for children and families who have been impacted by these events.
