Portion of Chapel Street in New Haven to become a two-way road

The city of New Haven announced that the area of Chapel Street between College Street and York Street will be converted from one-way to two-way traffic starting the week of April 20.

To prepare for the conversion, this area of Chapel Street will be paved starting at 7 p.m. on Monday. Parking will be prohibited in the area beginning at 6 p.m. on Monday.

The road will reopen to traffic on time for the Tuesday morning commute, according to a city spokesperson.

This marks the beginning of the city’s plan to convert the entire length of Chapel Street to a two-way road over time.

The majority of street parking will remain in place, but a few parking spaces at intersections will be lost as a result of this change, according to the city’s transportation, traffic, and parking website.

This conversion is part of a broader project aimed at improving traffic flow, reducing speeding, and increasing safety. The project is supported by state and local funding, as well as $11 million in federal funding from the Safe Streets and Roads for All grant.

Other anticipated safety improvements include accessible pedestrian signals and push buttons, high-visibility crosswalks, improved signage for turning vehicles, and enhanced signal timing.

The city also plans to add dedicated commercial loading zones to further support business deliveries. The New Haven Police Department will also increase ticketing for vehicles illegally parked on Chapel Street.
