Stanley Black & Decker is closing its manufacturing facility in New Britain, the company announced on Thursday.
The facility predominantly makes tape measures.
There has been a decline in demand for those products, according to a Stanley Black & Decker spokesperson.
The closure will affect about 300 employees, according to Rep. David DeFronzo (D-New Britain).
“You know it’s a sad day for New Britain. Stanley Works has a long history here and slowly but surely its presence has been eroded,” DeFronzo said.
Stanley Black & Decker has been in New Britain since 1843.
They are the largest hand and power tool manufacturer in the world, according to the company’s website.
“I am deeply disappointed by the news that Stanley Black & Decker will be closing its Myrtle Street operations in New Britain. Our immediate focus is on the workers and families affected,” Mayor Bobby Sanchez said in a statement.
Some impacted employees may be offered positions at other facilities, the spokesperson said. Others will be given severance packages and job placement support.
“[…] I am hopeful that these skilled workers will be repurposed with the help of Stanley Black & Decker, a company that will still proudly be headquartered here in Connecticut,” Gov. Ned Lamont said regarding the closure. “My administration is working closely with local and state leaders to support affected workers and to reimagine the factory site so it can continue to create opportunity and strengthen New Britain’s economic future.”
It’s not clear when the facility will close.
Stanley Black & Decker’s headquarters is expected to remain in New Britain.
