After advancing to the Class MM quarterfinals last year with a relatively young team, the Suffield girls kept that momentum this year, finishing 18-2 in the regular season.
Suffield is ranked third in Division III heading into the state tournament, behind Ansonia and Coventry, last year’s Class S champion. One of Suffield’s losses came to Coventry, 60-46, on Dec. 18 (the other was to Ellington, which is ranked fifth in Division III).
Suffield has won 15 straight, including overtime victories over Enfield and Ellington.
“All roads are going to go through Ellington and Coventry – the state tournament as well as the NCCC tournament,” Suffield coach Jason Qua said.
His daughter, junior point guard Hazel Qua, is the team leader; she averages 24 points and 15 rebounds per game. Addison Holmes and Ava Petkovich are also junior captains and two sophomores – River Seagrave and Alex Eddy – also start.
Suffield will play in the NCCC tournament in a quarterfinal game Wednesday against the winner of the Bolton-East Granby first-round game.
