Popular trail in Meriden getting new elevated boardwalk at Giuffrida Park
A popular hiking trail in Meriden is getting an update.
The Mattabesett Trail, which is apart of the Blue Blazed Trail system, will now feature an elevated boardwalk at the base of the Bradley Hubbard Resivor at Giuffrida Park.
Until now hikers would have to walk through mud and water to reach the other side of the trail.
The project is a collaboration between the city of Meriden, The CT Forest & Parks Association (CFPA), and Suzio Quarry, with materials and time donated.
Claire Kane the CFPA Trail Director tells us that volunteers, “are the drivers of projects like this… [they] are really the fuel that allows us to do this work.”
One of the volunteers we spoke with, Brian Lamphier, has been volunteering with CFPA for a little more than half a decade.
Lamphier enjoys being outdoors and hiking and encourages people to volunteer, saying, “if anybody that wants to volunteer for CFPA, they’re always looking”.
CFPA’s volunteer force helps to maintain not only the Mattabesett Trail, which spands nearly 100 miles in CT before continuing into Massachusetts and up to the New Hampshire boarder, but the additional 725 miles of Blue Blazed Trails in the state.

The elevated boardwalk at Giuffrida Park is expected to be open by the end of the month.
