Celtic Cottage Bakery & Farmstand: Irish Baked Goods + Delicious Gluten Free
Located in Brookfield, CT, the Celtic Cottage Bakery & Farmstand offers quality Irish baked goods and accommodates a wide range of food allergies. Following her father’s passing, self-taught baker Wendy Mitchell began to explore her Irish heritage. This led her to volunteer at the Greater Danbury Irish Cultural Center where she fell in love with traditional Irish recipes whilst baking for fundraisers.
In 2002 after 20 years of restaurant experience, Wendy began a catering service for individuals with restricted diets and food allergies. Her company, The Homestyle Gourmet, was inspired by her loved ones and culinary experience growing up.
“My dad was diabetic, my mother and my siblings are all gluten free and my daughter’s lactose intolerant,” Wendy said. “I’m the youngest of six, and at all the family gatherings we all got together and would cook and bake.”
For people with celiac or gluten sensitivity, appetizing gluten free food options are few and far between. Over the past decade since my sister was diagnosed with celiac, I have tasted a wide range of gluten free foods. It is a challenging feat for a wheat-free recipe (especially baked goods) to have a “normal” texture and taste. But after tasting Celtic Cottage’s gluten free scones, my sister and I agreed: you couldn’t tell there was a difference at all (they were so good, in fact, we even double checked to make sure we got gluten free).
Alongside the scones, Celtic Cottage offers focaccia, cookies, chocolate chip bars, blueberry and strawberry poundcake, and peach cobbler. While these treats do not include wheat in their recipe, they are not recommended for customers with sensitivity to cross contamination as the same ovens are used for wheat flour products. Vegan, nut free, and dairy free accommodations can be made by request.
The current menu offers Irish sodabread, Irish soda scones, and Irish soda muffins among many other traditional treats, but the star of the show is the millionaire shortbread. Also known as Irish shortbread, this treat is best described as salty, rich, creamy and chocolatey and will have you in love at first bite.
