Waterbury woman accused of holding her stepson captive plans on rejecting plea offer

An offer is on the table for the Waterbury woman accused of holding her stepson captive for over two decades.

The judge offered Kimberly Sullivan 30 years behind bars, suspended after ten, with five years of probation.

Sullivan’s defense told us that the offer is a nonstarter.

“I don’t anticipate this case ending with anything involving incarceration,” said Ioannis Kaloidis, Sullivan’s defense attorney.

This case unraveled last March, when a now 33-year-old man who goes by the name of ‘S’ set fire to his home in Waterbury, and says he did so to escape Sullivan, his stepmother.

Police say he was only 68 pounds at the time and was severely malnourished. S said that Sullivan held him captive in their home for over two decades. Sullivan denies every allegation.

“Kimberly has done nothing wrong, so she’s surprised any of this is even occurring,” said Kaloidis.

In court, the State’s Attorney shared that their offer was 30 years with 20 years suspended, but Kaloidis explained that the judge controls the sentence.

Sullivan will be back in court on September 4th to accept or reject the offer. But her team’s mind is made up.

“Once the offer is rejected, I do expect it to move faster, so we need to prepare for trial, line up experts,” said Kaloidis.

S’s attorneys did not have a comment on the offers today.
