Mosquitoes test positive for West Nile virus in East Haven
Health officials confirmed Tuesday that two more mosquitoes have tested positive for the West Nile virus, this time in East Haven.
Officials confirmed Connecticut’s first case of West Nile this year on July 7, reporting that a mosquito trapped in Milford tested positive for the virus.
The East Haven mosquitoes were trapped in the Kenneth Street area on July 16, according to officials.
Health officials said that the warm weather, high humidity and frequent rainfall have contributed to the spreading of the virus in mosquitoes, but that there have not been any human cases in the state so far this year.
There were six human cases of the virus in 2025 and 13 cases in 2024. Officials said that humans are most vulnerable to the virus in August and September.
Officials said that species of mosquitoes carrying the virus can be found in various places including old tires, stagnant pools of ground water, artificial containers or catch basins.
To avoid mosquito bites, officials advise people to ensure doors and window screens are tight-fitting and in good repair, wear long pants and long sleeves when mosquitoes are most active and use mosquito repellent.
Officials also advised people of ways to eliminate stagnant water in and around their properties, including cleaning clogged roof gutters, cleaning chlorinated pools when not in use and drilling holes at the bottoms of recycling containers.
