Teen arrested in connection to purse snatching outside East Haven grocery store

A teenager has been arrested in connection to a purse snatching that happened outside of a grocery store in East Haven on Saturday.

Officers were called to the ShopRite plaza around 2:15 p.m. for reports that a woman had been assaulted during the theft of her purse. The woman reportedly suffered minor injuries after being knocked to the ground and dragged during the incident.

Witnesses gave officers a description of the suspect and the getaway vehicle, which investigators said was quickly identified as a Kia Sportage that had been reported stolen earlier that day in North Haven. East Haven police worked with New Haven and West Haven police and found the vehicle abandoned on Elm Street in West Haven.

Investigators conducted a K9 track and authorities said it led officers to the front door of the suspect’s home.

The suspect, identified as a 13-year-old from West Haven, was taken into custody and is facing charges including robbery, assault, larceny of a motor vehicle and larceny.

The teen was transported to the Bridgeport Juvenile Detention Center where he is being held pending his next court appearance.

The investigation is active as detectives work to determine whether the teen or others may be connected to additional incidents.
