16-year-old seriously injured after motorized scooter collides with car in Norwalk
A 16-year-old was hospitalized with life-threatening injuries after a motorized scooter carrying the teen and another 16-year-old collided with an SUV in Norwalk on Sunday afternoon, police said.
The Norwalk Police Department received multiple 911 calls reporting the crash at the intersection of Water Street and Hanford Place around 2:54 p.m.
The motorized scooter, which was carrying two 16-year-olds, collided with an SUV that was making a left turn at the intersection. Both teens were thrown from the scooter, police said.
The 16-year-old operator had life-threatening injuries and was taken to Norwalk Hospital by ambulance. The 16-year-old passenger sustained injuries that are not considered life-threatening and was also transported to the hospital.
Police said neither of the teens on the scooter was wearing a helmet at the time of the crash.
“We would like to remind the public that helmets are one of the most effective ways to reduce the risk and severity of head injuries in crashes involving bicycles, scooters, and similar vehicles,” Norwalk police said.
The Norwalk Police Department’s Crash Reconstruction Unit is investigating the crash.
