Frisbie's celebrates National Ice Cream Day with 24 straight hours of scoops

National Ice Cream Day meant around-the-clock service at Frisbie’s Dairy Barn on Sunday.

The New Britain-based ice cream shop celebrated the day by staying open for 24 consecutive hours, a tradition that began at its original location six years ago.

But this year, all six Frisbie’s Dairy Barn locations participated in the event the first time—four locations in Connecticut and two in Massachusetts.

“We wanted to do something that was pretty different,” said supervisor Fasiha Mirza. “Not too many places are open for 24 hours. And what is the best time to do it if not on National Ice Cream Day? All of the employees love doing it.”

Mirza says the overnight hours proved just as busy as the daytime rush. Even before sunrise, customers were stopping by for a cone.

“We’ve had a line to the door from 12 a.m. to about 2 a.m., give or take,” Mirza said.

For Jake Gonzalez, making an early-morning ice cream run has become an annual tradition.

“I’ve been doing this for a couple of years now, and I want to say I’ve came at this time for the past three years at least,” Gonzalez said. “I just love ice cream a lot. Especially if I could get it early one day a year. I’ll definitely do it, because I’ll eat at any time of the day.”

Others made more spontaneous plans after seeing our early morning reports on it!

“I saw you on TV and I forgot they were open for the 24 hour ice cream thing,” Paula Moschogiannakis said. “So I came down to get the ice cream before the FIFA World Cup today.”

Keeping the shop open for an entire day takes plenty of preparation, from making hundreds of gallons of homemade ice cream to baking fresh waffles and scheduling additional staff.

But for Frisbie’s, they wouldn’t have it any other way.

“Don’t worry, we have trained for this and we make sure that the line moves very quickly,” Mirza said.
