Gary Cosgrave, Board Member Emeritus of MoCA Connecticut, passed away on December 16, 2024. Gary’s contributions to our organization and the broader arts community leave an enduring legacy that will be cherished by all who had the privilege of knowing him.

As a dedicated two-time president of Westport Arts Center (WAC) now known as MoCA Connecticut, member of our Board and a passionate advocate for the arts, Gary was instrumental in shaping the vision and mission of MoCA Connecticut. His tireless efforts, generous spirit, and unwavering commitment to fostering creativity and cultural enrichment were evident in every project he touched. From championing exhibitions that showcased emerging talent to providing mentorship and guidance to fellow board members, Gary’s influence was profound and far-reaching.

Gary’s love for the arts extended beyond MoCA, as he remained deeply involved in initiatives that supported artists and enriched the cultural fabric of our community. His thoughtful insights, warm demeanor, and steadfast leadership made him not only an exceptional board member but also a cherished friend to many of us.

Gary felt that WAC “was at a critical point where it had to decide how to preserve its history while simultaneously transitioning to the next step in its evolution.”

” WAC had to change its structure, invest in its development, and broaden and diversify its Board to include more talent, diversity, and a youthful perspective. This is one of the cornerstones that set the successful new culture of the Arts Center today. It also had to blend the needs of local artists and the broader metropolitan arts community,” stated Gary.”

Former long-time friend and WAC  past board member Joyce Thompson recalled, “As president, Gary helped put WAC on a new course of governance. We could always count on his counsel, business experience, and good humor to find the right path.” Thompson’s sentiments are echoed by another friend and WAC board member Elizabeth Strick, who said, “Gary has championed the arts in our community and has contributed significantly to the Arts Center’s growth. He is a much-respected presence at the Arts Center and we are so grateful for all he has done and continues to do.”

As we reflect on Gary’s remarkable life and his countless contributions, let us also honor his memory by continuing the work he held so dear. MoCA Connecticut remains a testament to his vision and dedication, and we are committed to upholding the values he so passionately championed.

Please join us in extending our deepest condolences to Gary’s fiancé, Dina Upton, his family and loved ones during this difficult time.
